How physical-card and software-generated Baccarat differ in fairness, speed, shoes, odds and UK regulation.

Written by Stephen Tabone for Global Casino Games. Last reviewed: 20 July 2026.

Quick Answer

Live Dealer Baccarat uses real cards from a physical shoe, while RNG Baccarat produces results through software. Neither format raises or lowers the house edge by itself. The Baccarat variant, drawing rules and paytable fix the casino advantage. The main differences are how outcomes are produced, how visible the process is and how quickly money can be placed into action.
The Baccarat Paradox
Same Math, Different Velocity
RNG BACCARAT (Software Pace) High Exposure Speed
~180 rph
LIVE DEALER (Physical Shoe) Controlled Exposure Speed
~60 rph
The Rule: The house edge never changes, but your speed of play dictates how quickly your bankroll faces it.

Live Dealer Baccarat and RNG Baccarat can look almost identical on screen.

Both may display Banker, Player and Tie betting areas, roadmaps, side bets, previous results and animated cards.

The important difference is how the outcomes are produced.

At a live table, physical cards are shuffled into a shoe. Once their order is fixed, the future card sequence is already inside that shoe. The compulsory Baccarat drawing rules then determine how those cards are divided between the Player and Banker hands.

At an RNG table, software generates the result according to the rules programmed into the game.

For the scoring system, card values and main wagers, begin with my guide explaining how to play Baccarat.

What Is Live Dealer Baccarat?

Live Dealer Baccarat uses real cards at a physical table located in a casino or dedicated studio.

Players watch through a video stream and place digital wagers before the betting window closes.

A normal round follows this sequence:

  1. Players place their wagers.
  2. The dealer removes cards from the physical shoe.
  3. Scanners identify the card values.
  4. The fixed Punto Banco drawing rules are applied.
  5. The result appears on screen.
  6. The software settles the wagers.

The cards produce the result.

The cameras, scanners and casino software communicate and settle it.

Is the Future Outcome Already Inside a Live Baccarat Shoe?

In practical terms, yes.

Once the cards have been shuffled and loaded, the order of the remaining physical cards is fixed unless the shoe is disturbed or a procedural error occurs.

The precise Banker, Player and Tie sequence then develops from that card order and the compulsory drawing rules.

A shoe could produce:

  • Ten Player wins followed by ten Banker wins.
  • A Banker run lasting 16 or 17 hands.
  • Repeated Banker–Player chops.
  • Several Ties close together.
  • Irregular sequences with no obvious pattern.

Anything permitted by the card order and drawing rules can occur.

The shoe does not respond because one player placed more money on Banker or because most of the table backed Player.

Strictly speaking, the shoe fixes the future card order. Once that order and the drawing rules are fixed, the sequence of outcomes is also determined as the cards are consumed.

Does the Live Dealer Control the Result?

No.

The dealer follows the published procedure and handles the equipment. The dealer does not choose whether Banker or Player wins and does not freely decide whether another card should be dealt.

What Are the Baccarat Third-Card Rules?

If either hand has a natural total of 8 or 9, the round normally ends.

Player’s two-card totalAction

6 or 7Stand
8 or 9Natural; both sides stand

If Player stands, Banker draws on totals of 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7.

If Player draws, Banker follows the tableau:

What Is RNG Baccarat?

RNG Baccarat uses software rather than a physical shoe to produce the result.

RNG means random number generator.

The game may:

  • Generate each round independently.
  • Simulate a continuing six- or eight-deck shoe.
  • Reshuffle after a stated point.
  • Reset the virtual cards after every completed hand.

The rules screen should explain the deck model, reshuffling method, payouts and any special no-commission conditions.

A regulated RNG game should produce unpredictable results according to its published rules. It should not change the probability because the player increased a wager, recently won or recently lost.

Can RNG Baccarat Make Me Lose Because I Increased My Bet?

A regulated game should not do that.

Suppose a player increases a wager from £10 to £100 and loses. It can feel as though the software reacted to the larger stake.

One result does not prove that.

The same player could increase the wager and win. Individual wins and losses cannot establish whether an RNG game is fair or unfair.

The important questions are:

  • Is the operator regulated?
  • Has the game been independently tested?
  • Does the software follow the published rules?
  • Is there a clear dispute and complaint procedure?

This is why I would only consider playing at a casino regulated for the player’s jurisdiction.

An unregulated operator may not provide the same testing, records, technical controls or enforcement. Unscrupulous practices are harder to challenge when no effective regulator stands behind the game.

Can Live or RNG Baccarat Change the House Edge?

No.

Live dealing and RNG software do not independently raise or lower the house edge.

The casino advantage is set by:

  • The Baccarat variant.
  • The number of decks.
  • Banker commission or replacement rule.
  • Tie payout.
  • Side-bet payout.
  • Any special push or half-pay condition.

Under standard eight-deck commission Baccarat:

WagerApproximate house edgeApproximate RTP
Banker1.06%98.94%
Player1.24%98.76%
Tie paying 8 to 114.36%85.64%

A standard live table and a standard RNG game using the same rules should have the same theoretical casino advantage.

The House Edge Reality Check
How Different Side Bets Drain Your Bankroll Compared to Main Stakes
BANKER WAGER (Core Game) 1.06% House Edge
PLAYER/BANKER PAIR (Side Bet) 10.36% House Edge
TIE BET (Side Bet) 14.36% House Edge
SUPER 6 (Side Bet) 29.98% House Edge
The Takeaway: High payouts mask aggressive mathematics. Side bets perform identical house drains whether a dealer handles the paper or code spins the virtual wheels.

A live dealer does not reduce the house edge, and computer-generated cards do not automatically increase it. The rules and paytable determine the mathematics in both formats.

The Baccarat Banker commission and no-commission guide explains how different variants change the Banker wager.

Do Baccarat Side Bets Carry the Same House Edge?

No.

Side bets normally carry a considerably larger casino advantage than Banker or Player.

WagerCommon payoutApproximate house edge
Banker0.95 to 11.06%
Player1 to 11.24%
Player or Banker Pair11 to 110.36%
Perfect Pair25 to 113.03%
Tie8 to 114.36%
Super 6 side bet12 to 129.98%

The exact figures depend on the deck model and payout schedule.

A live table and an RNG game can both offer a low-edge Banker wager alongside expensive Pair, Tie or Banker 6 bets.

See my Baccarat side-bet and Égalité guide for the wider comparison.

Is Live Dealer Baccarat Fairer Than RNG Baccarat?

It is better to separate fairness into three questions.

Mathematical Integrity

Does the game follow its published drawing rules, probabilities and paytable?

A correctly run live game should settle the physical cards according to those rules.

A properly tested RNG game should generate results according to its published software model.

Integrity means that the game operates as described.

It does not mean that the player and casino have equal odds. The house edge remains built into the available wagers.

Visible Transparency

Live Baccarat allows the player to watch physical cards leave the shoe.

That visible procedure can feel easier to trust.

RNG Baccarat requires trust in the software, testing process, operator and regulator because the underlying random calculation cannot be watched directly.

Regulation and Oversight

Regulation does not guarantee that no error will ever occur.

It creates:

  • Testing requirements.
  • Technical standards.
  • Game records.
  • Audit trails.
  • Complaint procedures.
  • Enforcement powers.

Without effective regulation, those protections may be weaker or absent.

Are Live Dealer and RNG Baccarat Games Fair in the UK?

UK-licensed Live Dealer and RNG Baccarat games must follow Gambling Commission standards covering game fairness, outcome generation, technical testing and settlement.

For Live Dealer Baccarat, the operator should ensure that:

  • Physical cards and dealing equipment operate correctly.
  • Dealers follow the published procedure.
  • Camera, scanning and settlement systems record the round accurately.
  • Game logs and surveillance records are maintained.
  • Errors affecting customers are investigated.

For RNG Baccarat, the operator should ensure that:

  • Outcomes are acceptably random and unpredictable.
  • The game follows its published rules and paytable.
  • Probabilities do not change because a player increases a wager, wins or loses.
  • The result-generation system is tested.
  • Records are available when a round is disputed.

This does not mean that a UK-licensed game has no casino advantage.

Regulation addresses whether the game operates as described.

It does not remove the house edge.

Players can check an operator’s status through the UK Gambling Commission public register.

Which Format Is Faster?

RNG Baccarat is normally faster because it removes physical dealing, card scanning and shared betting windows.

Stake per hand60 rounds120 rounds180 rounds
£10£600 wagered£1,200 wagered£1,800 wagered

The house edge per hand remains fixed.

Faster play places more money into action during the same period.

See my Baccarat bankroll management guide and Mini Baccarat comparison for the effect of speed on financial exposure.

Can Errors Occur?

Possible live-table errors include:

  • Failed card scans.
  • Incorrect card values appearing on screen.
  • Stream interruptions.
  • A roadmap disagreeing with the cards.
  • Incorrect settlement.

Possible RNG problems include:

  • Frozen animation.
  • Disconnection.
  • Delayed settlement.
  • Incorrect balance display.
  • Unclear shoe or reshuffling information.

An apparent display problem does not necessarily mean that the underlying result changed.

Record the table, game number, time, cards and screenshots before contacting the operator.

Do Roadmaps Mean the Same Thing?

Both formats can display the Bead Plate, Big Road and derived roads.

A live roadmap records outcomes from a physical shoe.

An RNG roadmap records software-generated rounds.

When the RNG game resets after every hand, the roadmap is a history display rather than evidence about cards remaining in one continuing shoe.

Neither format makes the roadmap predictive.

See my Baccarat roadmaps and pattern strategy guide.

Live Dealer vs RNG Baccarat: Which Should You Choose?

Choose Live Dealer Baccarat when you prefer:

  • Physical cards.
  • A visible shoe.
  • Dealer interaction.
  • A slower shared pace.
  • Card-squeezing presentation.

Choose RNG Baccarat when you prefer:

  • Private play.
  • Immediate access.
  • Faster rounds.
  • Lower possible minimums.
  • Short sessions.

These are preferences.

They are not methods of changing the odds.

Live Dealer Baccarat vs RNG Baccarat: Which Is Better?

Live Dealer Baccarat and RNG Baccarat generate outcomes differently.

A live shoe contains a fixed future card order after shuffling. The Baccarat drawing rules turn that order into Banker, Player and Tie results as the cards are dealt.

RNG Baccarat relies on programmed rules and random-outcome software. At a regulated casino, the probabilities should not change because the player increased a wager, recently won or recently lost.

Neither format raises or lowers the house edge by itself.

The variant and paytable determine the mathematics.

The format determines the playing experience.

The speed determines how quickly money is exposed to the house edge.

Live Dealer Baccarat may suit players who prefer physical cards, a visible shoe and a slower shared table. RNG Baccarat may suit players who prefer privacy, quicker rounds and lower possible minimum stakes.

The better choice is therefore the format with clear rules, suitable limits, transparent regulation and a pace the player can control.

The Final Decision Grid
Aligning the Format with Your Session Objectives
Choose Live For:
• Narrative pacing
• Physical visibility
• Natural brakes on play
Choose RNG For:
• Micro-sessions
• Strategic isolation
• Absolute stake control
The Ultimate Truth: Code or card, your edge lies exclusively in how rigidly you discipline your bankroll, not which screen engine generates the results.
